Red Hot Summer Fishing!

There’s no denying it, summer is truly here. With most of the country feeling the throes of a massive heatwave, Southwest Florida’s tropical weather remains consistent. It amazes me that our weather can actually be cooler than some of the northern states. Throw in the cooling effect of afternoon thunder showers and the conditions on the water are downright comfy. The key is what I call first and last. You need to plan your days around the first few hours of light and the last few. Mornings can provide heated action on both fly and plugs. Top water flies and lures are smashed with reckless abandon from snook, redfish and juvenile tarpon. The afternoon post storm hours can also be exciting and usually have stronger tides. Both Estero to the north and the Everglades to the south are still producing great numbers of redfish. Don’t worry about the heat as the bite usually takes a siesta from 11am until 4pm. Don’t miss out on some of the best fishing of the year.
